find out morePacked with laughter, memorable songs and spectacular dancing, the Emmy Award–winning Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical tells the story of two high school students - Troy (Zac Efron), a popular basketball player and Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens), a shy, brainy newcomer - who share a secret passion for singing. When these two seemingly polar opposites decide to join forces and go out for the lead roles in the school musical, it wreaks havoc on East High's rigid social order. In a desperate effort to maintain the status quo, the school's various cliques conspire to separate the pair and keep them from performing. But by defying expectations and pursuing their dreams, Troy and Gabriella inspire other students to go public with some surprising hidden talents of their own.
Teenagers Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez meet by chance on the final night of winter vacation when they perform an impromptu duet together during the ski resort's Karaoke night. After sharing a magical moment that may have been more than just musical, the two trade cell phone numbers, albeit with little hope of ever seeing each other again. So a week later, when Gabriella shows up as a new student at Troy's school, they are both happily surprised.
A star basketball player whose father also happens to be the coach, Troy has a reputation as a popular jock and is expected to date cheerleaders and focus his energy on the team's push to win the league championship. Gabriella, on the other hand, is brilliant but shy and is being actively recruited for the school's academic decathlon team. Still, when auditions for the school musical are announced, both kids decide to take a chance on their newly discovered interest in singing - and each other.
As word spreads that Troy and Gabriella are going out for the leads in the play, it rattles the cages of reigning drama queen Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) and her brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), who consider it their birthright to star in every school production. The students' out-of-character behaviour also worries Troy's best buddy and teammate Chad (Corbin Bleu) and Gabriella's new friend and fellow decathlon star Taylor (Monique Coleman). Determined to keep the pair in their "real" social circles - and off the stage - the kids hatch various devious plots to come between Troy and Gabriella and thwart their acting ambitions.
In the end, Troy and Gabriella must each decide if they have the passion and inner strength to be true to themselves.
